You may have
watched the movie “The Secret” or read the book. Even if you haven’t you
have almost certainly heard of the “Law of Attraction”.
The Law of
Attraction states that life does not just happen to you. Rather you can
shape and even create what happens to you by attracting to yourself the
life you desire. The basic premise is that in the “universe” like
attracts like, and your thoughts attract and actually manifest real
situations, people, material things etc into your everyday reality. So
the more you think about and focus on something the more you will
attract it to yourself and the more likely it will come to pass.
So we have
the following sayings:
“What you
think about you bring about”.
“Where focus
goes, reality grows”.
But the fact
is the movie and the book
“The Secret”
are only part of the truth.
So let me be
clear about what I believe:
1. There is
without question a Law of Attraction that operates in the universe.
2. Like all
universal laws, the law of Attraction is a God-given law that the movie
and the book “The Secret” have humanized, mystified, and secularized.
Let me
explain the biblical principles behind the Law of Attraction. You will
be able to see clearly where this universal principle came from.
1. Creativity
We are all
created in God’s image. This means we have the same characteristics as
God himself. One of those key characteristics is that we have been
created with the ability to ourselves create. We are beings who have
creativity and the ability to create new physical things, as well as
creating our own situations and our reality.
2. Prayer
Jesus teaches
that we can alter the world around us and our own reality through
prayer. One day the disciples asked Jesus how they should pray. Wouldn’t
that be a fantastic thing to know? Well Jesus answered them and gave us
“the Lord’s prayer.”
A key part of
that prayer is:
“Your kingdom
come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6 v 10.
This is
exactly the spiritual law of attraction at work. Praying this prayer to
God means focusing your attention on changing things on earth so they
are like things in heaven – peace, joy, abundance, fulfilment, and so
on.
And again,
even more clearly:
Jesus said
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you
have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11 v 24
3. Bringing
Things Into Existence
The Bible
even recommends believing, imagining and focusing on situations you
want, even if they do not exist now. Consider this verse:
“…the God who
gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as if they were.”
Romans 4 v 17
God can “call
things that are not [i.e. don’t exist now] as if they were [as if they
did exist]” – and by so doing, bring them into existence.
So if God can
do it and we are made in his image, it stands to reason that we too can
bring things into existence that do not exist now.
4. Practical
Law of Attraction Advice From the Bible
Because the
Bible is filled with God’s wisdom and instruction to us on how to live
our lives, we should expect practical advice on how to utilize this
universal law in our lives. Here are some examples:
“Finally,
brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything
is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4 v 8
Just pure
advice to focus, concentrate and think about things that are good, pure
and positive.
“For as he
thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23 v 7
A clear
instruction that what you think about, becomes who you are!
“The good man
brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil
man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out
of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6 v 45
Once again a
crystal clear instruction that when you store up good things in your
heart, it manifests in good things in your reality. Yes we really can
“bring good things out of the good stored up in [our] hearts”! We can
actually bring good things into existence simply because of the good
that is in our heart. Of course the opposite is also true, so be very
careful what you store up in your heart.
“I tell you
the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the
sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says
will happen, it will be done for him.” Mark 11 v 23
Wow! There is
literally no limit to what we can manifest in reality if we:
a) Really
believe it; and
b) Speak it
into existence.
I am excited
just thinking about what I can bring into existence!
“Remember
this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
generously will also reap generously.” 2 Corinthians 9 v 6
This is true
in your mind as well as in your actions. If you sow positive thoughts,
feelings and attitudes, you will reap in the same fashion.
