Self talk is
a critical part of our spiritual life as well.
In Genesis
Chapter 1 God spoke the world into existence, for example verse three
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” It therefore
follows that because we are made in the image of God, our words are
powerful and effective in making things happen in the world and in our
own lives. This extends to our circumstances and the lives of those
around us.
We shouldn’t
be surprised that as sons and daughters of God we can use our words and
our self talk to create our reality.
People who
are familiar with the Bible will know this. Let’s look at some examples:
Proverbs 16 v
24
Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the
bones.
Positive
words are good for your soul and can even bring healing.
Proverbs 12 v
14
From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things.
Positive
words can fill up a person with good things on the inside.
2 Corinthians
10 v 5
…we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
We need to
ensure that all of our thoughts (many of which are self talk) are
thoughts that are in line with Jesus’ teaching and life.
Luke 6 v 45
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart,
and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his
heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
Our mouths
speak out what is truly in our hearts. If we are positive, encouraging
and loving, that will come through in our words. In this way we actively
make the world a better place.
Matthew 18 v
18
“I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in
heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Our words are
so powerful they can have an impact on the spiritual world, not just the
physical world.
Matthew 18 v
19
“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you
ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.”
And:
James 5 v 16
“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
When we pray,
we are speaking out words that have real power. Prayer is therefore a
powerful way of changing the world, as well as our own hearts.
Most of us
are familiar with King David’s famous Psalm 23. It is pure self talk:
The Lord is
my shepherd (verse 1)
I shall not want (verse 2)
He leads me beside still waters (verse 2)
He restores my soul (verse 3)
I will fear no evil (verse 4)
My cup overflows (verse 5)
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life (verse
6)
And again in
Psalm 18:
He brought me
out into a spacious place (verse 19)
With my God I can scale a wall (verse 29)
He enabled me to stand on the heights (verse 33)
My arms can bend a bow of bronze (verse 34)
You stoop down to make me great (verse 35)
You broaden the path beneath me (verse 36)
As spiritual
beings we have to be exceptionally aware of our words and our self talk
because they powerfully impact us and the people around us.
Suggestions:
1. Work to
remove all negative self talk from your life.
2. Replace it with positive self talk.
3. Work to remove any negative talk about other people or situations.
4. Replace it with positive talk about others and the world around you.
5. Pray regularly and remember that when you pray, you are powerfully
impacting yourself and the world around you.
