Remember the
career advice you received at school? You fill out a form or a computer
program on your likes and dislikes and aptitudes. It spits out a list of
traditional dead-end, zero-fun, mind-numbing jobs. The list never
includes dream- fulfilling opportunities: guitar hero, treasure hunter,
explorer, urban artist, astronaut, trader or author.
Even more
important it ignores the far more important life choices such as:
• Work just a
few hours a week and spend the rest of the time (insert your ideal
activity here) – for example saving the planet, reading every science
fiction book ever written, building the kingdom of God, surfing,
travelling the world.
• Find my
true vocation where I love it so much it isn’t work, it’s joy.
• I don’t
know what I want to do and I don’t care. I’m going to start doing the
things I love doing and never compromise. I am going to keep gravitating
to what I love until I find my place in the world.
All careers'
advisor jobs should be terminated. The world would be a far better place
if all careers advice offices had no people, just a sign that said “Take
form”. The form would say this:
• Do what you
love doing.
• Don’t compromise.
• Ignore your income.
• Become the best you can be.
• Change the world.
